What are sulphites?

A preservative widely used in winemaking to maintain the flavour and freshness of wine.
"Sulfites are particularly associated with a long list of side effects related to wine consumption, including the dreaded wine-induced headache. Research suggests that these compounds may affect some people more than others.  While some people can tolerate sulfites, others may experience serious side effects, such as hives, swelling, and stomach pain."   - www.healthline.com

Why are there sulphite warnings on the back label of wines and sparkling wines?

The reason why most wines have a sulphite warning on the back is because sulphites are commonly used in winemaking as a preservative. Sulphites are a type of chemical compound that can be added to wine to prevent spoilage and oxidation, and to maintain freshness and flavor over time.

However, some people are sensitive or allergic to sulphites and can experience adverse reactions when they consume them, such as headaches, breathing difficulties, or skin irritation. For this reason, governing bodies requires all wines that contain more than 10 parts per million (ppm) of sulphites to carry a warning label on the bottle.

It's worth noting that sulphites occur naturally in wine as a byproduct of fermentation, and many winemakers use minimal amounts of sulphites to avoid spoiling the wine. However, the use of sulphites is still a common practice in winemaking, and it's important for people who are sensitive or allergic to sulphites to be aware of their presence in wine.

What is sulphite sensitivity?

Some individuals experience a sensitivity from sulphites when consuming wine - the result could be allergy-like symptoms.

healthline.com describes it as follows: "Sulfites are particularly associated with a long list of side effects related to wine consumption, including the dreaded wine-induced headache.  Research suggests that these compounds may affect some people more than others.  While some people can tolerate sulfites, others may experience serious side effects, such as hives, swelling, and stomach pain." - www.healthline.comweb

md.com adds:"Sulfites are chemicals that are in some foods, either naturally or as additives. It’s rare, but some people (about 1 in 100, according to the FDA) are sensitive to these compounds ... and they can also happen naturally in the process of making wine and beer."- www.webmd.com

A study published in the National Library of Medicine concludes: "In our group of subjects, sulfite concentration in wine is related to the risk of developing headaches in individuals who are susceptible to wine induced headaches." - Eur J Clin Nutr.

Will The Wine Drops™ help with hangovers?

A hangover from having too much alcohol has little to do with sulphite sensitivity and more to do with the alcohol and dehydration. Always drink responsibly, stay hydrated and eat some food before consuming alcohol.
